thru the woods...

During a routine morning walk with the dog, I decided to slow down and look for colors and shapes, and anything unusual.

birch tree, awash in retro hues...

spiny thistle with a yellow crown...

leaf giving birth....

rite de passage...

His 10th birthday and Ari couldn't wait to take the field.  He had been waiting too long for the opportunity. Now, he was old enough to enter the colorfully orchestrated melee.

A day later, he seems to have forgotten the tears as he proudly narrates the action and points to his bruises...florid blemishes marking a transition.  (I ran around with a helmet and a camera as the paintballs reverberated.  Fortunately I was only stung once in the hand as I focused on the players.)

I flew down to Baton Rouge yesterday, and the lady sitting next to me on the plane happened to have bought the same novel I was reading. After trading titles and authors, she recommended a few places to eat during my trip:  Galatoire's, for upscale Creole cuisine; Coffee Call, for beignets and cafe au lait; and Acme Oyster House, for grilled oysters and roast beef po'boys.

This was my first trip to Baton Rouge, and even though I have been to New Orleans a few times I was unprepared for the overwhelming experience.  My grandfather who graduated from LSU's law school introduced me to beignets an early age.  I grew up listening to his stories of Louisiana's political corruption during the time of Huey P. Long.  So, in his honor I set out to gather a bit of his favorite flavors.  (The shrimp and grits at Galatoire's was my favorite.)

Tomorrow, I fly back home with a full stomach and wonderful memories.

A hot and humid day in DC feels like a warm shower of soap bubbles.  Summer is here, and I can't wait for October.
