I flew down to Baton Rouge yesterday, and the lady sitting next to me on the plane happened to have bought the same novel I was reading. After trading titles and authors, she recommended a few places to eat during my trip:
Galatoire's, for upscale Creole cuisine;
Coffee Call, for beignets and cafe au lait; and
Acme Oyster House, for grilled oysters and roast beef po'boys.
This was my first trip to Baton Rouge, and even though I have been to New Orleans a few times I was unprepared for the overwhelming experience. My grandfather who graduated from LSU's law school introduced me to beignets an early age. I grew up listening to his stories of Louisiana's political corruption during the time of Huey P. Long. So, in his honor I set out to gather a bit of his favorite flavors. (The shrimp and grits at Galatoire's was my favorite.)
Tomorrow, I fly back home with a full stomach and wonderful memories.
